Manny Putz, SPASH Hold Onto Their D1 Titles By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Onalaska's Manny Putz played his cards a bit more conservatively Saturday at the Wisconsin cross country championships and won his second straight Division 1 individual title. Putz stayed with the leaders until the end and then kicked away from Stevens Point senior Aloysius Franzen and won by almost four seconds in 15:05.8. Grady Lenn, a sophomore from De Pere, was third in 15:17.0. Franzen and his SPASH teammates won the state title with 36 points and figure to be one of the favorites for an NXN berth at the NXR Heartland meet on Nov. 12 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Ella Anschutz of Muskego won the Division 1 girls race by 15 seconds in 18:00.3. Slinger High unseated Muskego as the team champion, putting four runners in the top 25 of the overall results (top 15 in the team scoring) on the way to 78 points. Five of the team's top six are sophomores. Lakeside Christian edged out Winneconne 112-116 to win the Division 2 boys team title. Noah Kuhn of Edgewood won the race in 15:50.5, pulling away in the final mile to win by 10 seconds. Nora Gremban of Northland Pines ran 17:46.7 for the fastest time of the day for girls. She had finished third two years ago and second in 2022. Her time is tied for the second fastest ever in the Division 2 race. The Xavier girls won the team championship with 75 points. Kohler won its second straight Division 3 championship with 109 points, five points better than Solon Springs/Northwood. Charlie Vater of Iola-Scandinavia won the race in 15:49.7. Autumn Michalski of Chequamegon won the girls Division 3 race in 18:02.0, the fastest in meet history by more than 50 seconds. Lancaster won the team championship.
