Middleton Girls, Stevens Point Boys Win Wisconsin's Alternate Season Cross Country Titles

Lauren Pansegrau Runs 17:07 For 5,000m To Lead Middleton Girls

Lauren Pansegrau completed the first half of an unusual one-day double on Saturday morning when she crushed the course under her feet at Blackhawk Country Club in Janesville, Wis. to the tune of 17:07.3 to win the WIAA's Alternate Season Cross Country Championship. 

About 60 schools in Wisconsin that were not allowed to compete in the fall sports season due to COVID-19 reasons were allowed to participate in the alternate season this spring. 

That group of was whittled down to a state final with eight schools per gender and some individual qualifiers. 

Pansegrau and teammate Bella Chirafisi, was 12th, were due to begin their track and field seasons Saturday night at Distance Night at Palatine in Illinois. PRE-MEET INTERVIEW WITH MIDDLETON COACHES AND ATHLETES

The Middleton girls put five scorers in the top 18 overall and scored 41 points. Pansegrau's winning time was 80 seconds faster than second-place finisher Genevieve Nashold of Madison West. 

Oregon High finished second with 76 points and Madison West was third with 79. 

Jake Bourget, as expected, won the boys championship race in 15:38.6. He won the Wisconsin Meet of Champions race last November after the first state championship event and won all of his spring meets. 

Bourget led Stevens Point to the title with 32 points. The team packed five scorers into the top 17 overall. 

Middleton's Griffin Ward and Ryan Schollmeyer placed second and third, respectively, in 15:43.2 and 15:43.9. 

Sun Prairie finished second with 69 points, followed by Green Bay Preble with 91 points and Middleton with 95.
